Graphic design, photography and architecture all inform my work. I use shape, texture, layering and a very physical approach, – often sanding, scraping, removing paint and reworking the canvas to build up layers of 'history'. Creating a story — or a kind of palimpsest.
One significant source of inspiration is the sides of old . In particular, when a building adjacent to another is torn down, often outlines and shadows of the now structure are revealed. Ghost staircases that now lead to nowhere, and roof lines suspended in remaining plaster. Although my work is not a literal translation of these images, it is an exploration of layering, history and revealing.
